Citizens´ Solar Power Plants
What started as an alternative green investment idea in the aftermath of the Fukushima catastrophe became only a year later reality and one of Viennas most prominent innovations and best practices for combining citizen involvement with clean energy strategy and the significant increase of solar power within Viennas energy mix. Meanwhile more than 20 solar power plants have been financed 100% by the people of Vienna (shares start at €50 and are limited to €10.000 per holder). Plants are constructed and maintained by Viennas municipally owned energy company „Wien Energie“ and hold proof, that out-of-the-box- thinking, fostering a culture of collaboration and offering citizens opportunities for shared action regularly lead to innovation and exceeding objectives.
