City Bike – the worlds first bicycle sharing scheme
Starting 2002 with one of the worlds first experiments in free bike sharing schemes , Vienna proceeded to create the first bicycle sharing scheme as a PPP with Gewista (a local branch of JC Decaux) and a smart solution later shared by numerous cities worldwide. Viennas innovative cycling strategy also includes cycling streets, constant cycling network expansion, innovative parking solutions and the creation of Viennas Mobility Agency, fostering cycling and walking, organizing events, managing innovation, servicing and forging community. The most recent successful initiative entailed grants for cargo-bikes resulting in a boom im cargo-bike use for individuals, shared neighborhood bikes and company bikes.
